High-performance control systems (HPCS) are sophisticated vibration-mitigation devices that include active, semiactive, and hybrid systems. HPCS leverage feedback mechanisms to dynamically adjust the damping force in response to motion, offering a good mitigation performance over a wide excitation bandwidth. These damping systems are attractive for multihazard mitigation of civil structures. However, the application of HPCS necessitates the design and integration of a closed-loop control system that can be susceptible to local failure or reduction in performance in the form of, for example, malfunctions of HPCS components, noisy measurements, wear, aging, and power unavailability. It follows that these sources of uncertainties ...

Neural networks are tools that are often used to perform functions such as object recognition in images, speech-to-text, and general data classification. Because neural networks have been successful at approximating these functions that are difficult to explicitly write, they are seeing increased usage in fields such as autonomous driving, airplane collision avoidance systems, and other safety-critical applications. Due to the risks involved with safety-critical systems, it is important to provide guarantees about the networks performance under certain conditions. As an example, it is critically important that self driving cars with neural network based vision systems correctly identify pedestrians 100% of ...

Soft-Switched Resonant Dc-Dc Converter In Underwater Dc Power Distribution Network, Tarak Saha
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Power distribution with DC source is advantageous over its AC counterpart in long distance distribution network due to the absence of effects of reactive components. Long distance power distribution with traditional voltage source suffers from drop in voltage over the length of the cable due to its impedance and forces the converters in the network to be over-designed with higher power rating than needed. In underwater power distribution network such as ocean observatory, marine sensors on the sea-bed etc., power conversion modules are situated at a distance far away from the shore, ranging from tens of kilometers to hundreds of ...

Efficient and cost-effective soft magnetic materials (SMMs) are essential for accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles and the sustainable growth of renewable electricity. While amorphous and nanocrystalline SMMs offer remarkably low magnetic losses, their poor mechanical properties, limited availability in size and shape (particularly ribbon widths), and high cost prevent them from widespread industrial application. Here, we show that ductile Fe-6.5%Si 2-D flakes could be used as building blocks for making high performance bulk SMMs. This approach bypasses the brittleness problem and creates a new morphology and a new fabrication method for the SMMs with improved energy efficiency ...

Development And Validation Of A Nonlinear Dynamic Model For Tuned Liquid Multiple Columns Dampers, Liang Cao, Yongqiang Gong, Filippo Ubertini, Hao Wu, An Chen, Simon Laflamme
Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering Publications
The tuned liquid column damper (TLCD), a passive damping device consisting of a large U-tube with oscillating liquid, has been shown to be effective at mitigating structural responses under natural hazards. Aside from their bandwidth-limited mitigation capabilities, a key limitation of TLCDs is in their large geometries that occupy large space often at prime locations. A solution is to implement multi-columned versions, termed tuned liquid multiple columns dampers (TLMCDs), which have the potential to be tuned to multiple frequencies and occupy less space by leveraging the multiple columns to allow fluid movement. However, mathematical models characterizing their dynamic behavior must ...

Effect Of Catholyte Concentration On Current Production During Chocolate Industry Wastewater Treatment By A Microbial Fuel Cell, Diana Rahayuning Wulan, Suprihanto Notodarmojo
Makara Journal of Technology
Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) use bacteria as a catalyst to oxidize organic and/or inorganic substrates and produce electric currents. Wastewater could function as an electron donor in the anode chamber and, thus, represents a very promising energy source. Catholytes, as electron acceptors, influence power production in MFCs by increasing the availability of electrons. The present research aims to determine the influence of catholyte concentration on current production in an aerobic two-chamber MFC. Aerobic treatment was carried out in the two-chamber MFC operated in an incubator at 37 ? 1 °C with and without aeration in the cathode chamber. Wastewater from ...

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is one of the main causes of liver damage, which can also lead to chronic hepatitis B (CHB) infection. More than 240 million individuals worldwide are chronic carriers of HBV. Among individuals with CHB who are untreated, approximately 15% – 40% will progress to liver cirrhosis or cancer. The interactions between HBV and host immune response play significant roles in the progression of CHB. CHB can be generally divided into four different clinical phases: immune tolerance (IT), immune clearance, inactive carrier, and Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-negative reactivation phase (ENEG). Many studies showed that interleukins ...

Large-scale deployment of renewable energy resources, both utility-scale and distributed, create reliability concerns for electrical power system operators. The weather-dependent, non-dispatchable nature of renewable resources decreases the ability of operators to match supply with demand. Concurrently, distributed energy resources, defined as small-scale loads, generation sources, and storage systems, are becoming ubiquitous within modern electrical systems. This literature review presents the grid services that utilities use to alleviate power systems reliability concerns, particularly those caused by renewable resources, and how aggregations of residential-scale distributed energy resources can be used to provide these services.
By aggregating distributed energy resources en masse to ...

Cyber attacks threaten the security of distribution power grids, such as smart grids. The emerging renewable energy sources such as photovoltaics (PVs) with power electronics controllers introduce new potential vulnerabilities. Based on the electric waveform data measured by waveform sensors in the smart grids, we propose a novel cyber attack detection and identification approach. Firstly, we analyze the cyber attack impacts (including cyber attacks on the solar inverter causing unusual harmonics) on electric waveforms in distribution power grids. Then, we propose a novel deep learning based mechanism including attack detection and attack diagnosis. By leveraging the electric waveform sensor data ...

The eddy current non-destructive evaluation (NDE) modelling using Stratton-Chu formulation-based fast algorithm is analysed. Stratton-Chu formulations, which have no low frequency breakdown issue, are selected for modelling electromagnetic NDE problems with low frequency and high conductivity approximations. As the main contribution of this article, the robustness and efficiency of the approximations, which result in big savings in both memory and CPU time, are validated and analysed using examples from practical EC testing. The boundary element method (BEM) is used to discretize the integral equations into a linear system of equations: the first order Rao-Wilton-Glisson (RWG) vector basis functions with the ...

3D face reconstruction is considered to be a useful computer vision tool, though it is difficult to build. This paper proposes a 3D face reconstruction method, which is easy to implement and computationally efficient. It takes a single 2D image as input, and gives 3D reconstructed images as output. Our method primarily consists of three main steps: feature extraction, depth calculation, and creation of a 3D image from the processed image using a Basel face model (BFM). First, the features of a single 2D image are extracted using a two-step process. Before distinctive-features extraction, a face must be detected to ...
