Nonlinear Dynamics Of Carbon Steel Corrosion Under Gamma Radiation, Youn Gyeong Shin

Corrosion of materials is still an unresolved problem affecting a multitude of industries. One of the grand challenges facing the corrosion community is the development of high-fidelity models for corrosion in actual service environments. The difficulties arise since corrosion involves transfer of metal atoms between the solid and solution phases thus making the system non-adiabatic. Interfacial transfer of atoms increases the chance of establishing systemic feedback between chemical reactions and transport processes, which results in chemical oscillation and periodic patterns on the corroding surfaces. Characterization Of Partial Charge Collection Induced By Neutron Damage In High-Purity Germanium Detectors, James W. Evans

This paper investigates the correlation of damage induced by neutron interactions and degradation in the spectra of HPGe detectors. As neutrons kinetically interact with germanium crystals, they create interstitial and vacancy defects within the lattice. These defects then interfere with the charge migration of electron-hole pairs and reduce resolution in the observed energy spectrum. The partial charge collection produces observable spectral changes by increasing the peak width and reducing resolution (full width half maximum). Gamma spectroscopy and gross neutron counting systems are commonly employed together during nuclear security operations, particularly mobile searches. The data from these systems are typically analyzed independently; however, operational data suggest a relationship between the background signals from both systems. This relationship appears to occur between the neutron count rate and the high energy (greater than 3 MeV) gamma spectrometer count rate for background conditions. An Administrative Monetary Penalty (AMP) is a penalty imposed by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), without court involvement for a violation of a regulatory requirement. An AMP can be applied against any individual or corporation subject to the Nuclear Safety Control Act, which regulates the development, production and use of nuclear energy and the production, possession and use of nuclear and radioactive material. However, AMPs are not the same as criminal offences. In thermal neutron spectrum Molten Salt Reactors (MSR), a graphite moderator contributes a positive reactivity value to the overall temperature reactivity coefficient of the core. When irradiated in the core, graphite undergoes dimensional changes which depend on the neutron spectrum. The graphite lifespan is a limiting parameter in MSR designs; it correlates strongly with the graphite’s dimensional changes. Multi-physics modeling is necessary to evaluate the graphite thermal and mechanical responses to the MSR core conditions. A forward analytic model is required to rapidly simulate the neutron time-of-flight (nToF) signals that result from magnetized liner inertial fusion (MagLIF) experiments at Sandia’s Z Pulsed Power Facility. Various experimental parameters, such as the burn-weighted fuel-ion temperature and liner areal density, determine the shape of the nToF signal and are important for characterizing any given MagLIF experiment. Extracting these parameters from measured nToF signals requires an appropriate analytic model that includes the primary DD neutron peak, once-scattered neutrons in the beryllium liner of the MagLIF target, and direct beamline attenuation. Modeling And Simulation Of Stochastic Neutron And Cumulative Deposited Fission Energy Distributions, Patrick O'Rourke

Methods of stochastic neutron transport are investigated and applied to novel formulations for the neutron number distribution and the cumulative fission energy deposition distribution. We utilize two Monte Carlo algorithms: the event-based Monte Carlo (EBMC) method and the Stochastic Simulation Algorithm (SSA) to benchmark and analyze systems. We show that the SSA outperforms the EBMC for the parameter space we are interested in. We then utilize the SSA to analyze systems composed of multiple spherical regions with fast and thermal neutrons with time-dependent reactivity insertions and determine whether group-dependent number distributions approach a gamma distribution.
