Kriging-Based Design For Robust High-Performance Control Systems, Laura Micheli, Simon Laflamme
Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering Publications
High-performance control systems (HPCS) are sophisticated vibration-mitigation devices that include active, semiactive, and hybrid systems. HPCS leverage feedback mechanisms to dynamically adjust the damping force in response to motion, offering a good mitigation performance over a wide excitation bandwidth. These damping systems are attractive for multihazard mitigation of civil structures. However, the application of HPCS necessitates the design and integration of a closed-loop control system that can be susceptible to local failure or reduction in performance in the form of, for example, malfunctions of HPCS components, noisy measurements, wear, aging, and power unavailability. It follows that these sources of uncertainties ...

Estimating The Effect Of Machining Parameters On Surface Roughness During Machining Of Hardened En24 Steel Using Coated Carbide Inserts, Sudhansu Ranjan Das, Amaresh Kumar, Debabrata Dhupal, Kali Charan Rath
International Journal of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering
In the present study, an attempt has been made to evaluate the performance of multilayer coated carbide inserts during dry turning of hardened EN24 steel (47 HRC). The effect of machining parameters (depth of cut, feed and cutting speed) on surface roughness parameters (Ra and Rz) were investigated by applying ANOVA. The experiments were planned based on Taguchi’s L27 Orthogonal array design. Results showed that surface roughness parameters (Ra and Rz) are mainly influenced by feed and cutting speed, whereas depth of cut exhibits minimum influence on surface roughness (Rz) and neglegible influence in case of surface roughness (Ra ...

International Journal of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering
Convective heat transfer is very important in the HVAC, refrigeration and microelectronics cooling applications. R134a is most widely adopted alternate refrigerant in refrigeration equipment, such as domestic refrigerators and air conditioners. Though the global warming up potential of R134a is relatively high, it is affirmed that it is a long term alternate refrigerants in lots of countries. The addition of nanoparticles to the refrigerant results in improvements in the thermophysical properties and heat transfer characteristics of the refrigerant, there by improving the performance of the refrigeration system. The performance of the domestic refrigeration system with HFC134a/mineral oil system was ...

Evaluation Of Supplier Selection In Manufacturing Industries Using Grey Relational Analysis- A Case Study, Veera Bahadur Aravind Reddy K, Saras Chandra T Reddy, G. Rajyalakshmi
International Journal of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering
Selection of supplier is one of the most critical activities performed by the organizations because of its strategic importance. Over the years a number of quantitative approaches have been applied to supplier selection problems. The selection process is commonly based on their previous performance records, so the ranking determines which supplier will get their supply contract. However a survey on current evaluation methods shows that they are all less objective and lack accurate data processing. These evaluation criteria often conflict, however and it is frequently impossible to find a supplier that excels in all areas. In addition some of the ...

International Journal of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering
Cryogenics is the branch of physics and engineering that involves the study of very low temperatures (below 123 K), how to produce them, and how materials behave at those temperatures. It is frequently applied to low temperature refrigeration applications such as in the study of physical phenomena of materials at temperature approaching absolute zero and in the liquefaction of gases. Liquefied gases such as liquid nitrogen and liquid helium are used in many cryogenic applications. Using liquid nitrogen as a refrigerant reduces chloro-fluorocarbon (CFC) emission in atmosphere and it is an eco-friendly technique. This paper deals with usage of liquid ...
